7 Lessons from Spiritual Care Week: Presence and Care

Happy Spiritual Care Ā· 2 min read Ā· Educational reflection

Spiritual Care Week was held from 18 to 24 October 2026 with the theme ā€œHealing Through Presence and Graceā€. In Canada, the related Spiritual Health Awareness Week carries the message ā€œSpiritual Health Mattersā€. Following that week, we are spending seven days reflecting on what spiritual care offers, whatever your faith or path.

Here are seven lessons, one for each day of the week.

1. Spiritual care begins with presence

At its heart, spiritual care is simple: someone sits with you, listens deeply and helps you reconnect with meaning, hope and faith. It is not about having the right answers. It is about not being alone with the questions.

2. Every faith, every story

Spiritual care is not limited to one religion. Happy Spiritual Care is grounded in Islamic tradition, and it is open to people of every faith and none: Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, spiritual but not religious, or still searching. Your beliefs and your questions are honoured.

3. Listening comes first

Gulsen Cok's training in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and her years as a spiritual care provider at the University of Victoria Multifaith Centre taught a simple approach: listen first, honour the person's faith, and walk beside them at their pace.

4. Grief is love with nowhere to go

In spiritual care we do not rush healing; we make room for it. The Japanese art of kintsugi repairs broken bowls with gold, so the cracks become part of their beauty. Grief can be held in the same way. You can read more in our guide to grief.

5. Small practices, deep roots

Try this today: sit quietly, breathe slowly for two minutes, name three blessings, and offer one prayer or intention for someone you love. Our free PDF, Five Gentle Practices for a Restless Heart, gathers a few more.

6. Being heard changes things

Many people tell us that simply feeling heard, without judgement, brings a sense of relief. Thank you to everyone who has trusted us with their stories. You can read reviews from Google.

7. An open invitation

As this week of presence closes, we would love to meet you. You are welcome to book a free 20-minute online introduction, from anywhere in the world, in English or Turkish.
